![]() The introduction of the "beta," or test, version of Netscape Navigator 2.0 places Netscape on a direct collision course with Microsoft and the rest of the software industry, while at the same time signaling that Netscape may be preparing to veer off in a radically new and uncharted direction that could overturn the balance of power in the software industry. ![]() The computer industry is about to get some clues about which course is more likely: Netscape released last week an experimental version of its popular Navigator software for browsing and using the Internet's World Wide Web. Some investors believe Netscape Communications could become "the next Microsoft." Other people believe that Netscape, the upstart Internet software company, could become the next Microsoft victim, and that the next Microsoft is none other than Microsoft itself.
